Following a suggestion in The Lounge, we decided to try our own little version of a Radio 4 PM programme photography project. The idea was to get as many of us as possible to take a picture on a given day, and then post them on the AP Forum. It would run monthly, and if it proved popular we would build up an interesting (hopefully!) photographic log of the daily activities of forum members. Our version was to be called FirstView, and would run throughout 2007.

The first day of each month would be designated as as FirstView day. The idea was that on the day we would each produce a picture that captures some part of our day - it could be some activity, or a place we went to, or something that was happening around us, or just about anything that says something about our day. We didn't need a title, but we'd provide the basic details of our pictures - time, place, activity, etc.

The 'Polaroid' motif is a deliberate one. It typifies the ethos of FirstView, in that the images are 'as taken', not tampered with, not edited, post-processed, sweated over, framed or touched up in any way. They are straight from the camera and into the archive. FirstView is about life not art, it's a snapshot of the first day of the month, forever...

Participation is entirely voluntary, and the usual forum rules apply for posted pictures - up to 600 pixels on the longest edge with a max file size of 100KB - images can be hosted FREE using the FV Gallery. We rely on your honesty about when the pictures were taken, but images not taken on the designated day would obviously somewhat invalidate the project, so please don't 'cheat'! And if you can't participate on any particular occasion, don't let that worry you. This isn't meant to be a tightly controlled scientific experiment - just a bit of fun, which might also prove to be interesting.

As with the Monthly Competition, there will be a special thread for posting FirstView pictures, and another one for any comments you want to make. The image posting thread will be closed for new submissions a couple of days after the event, so please be prompt about posting your contribution. If people are going to be away on holiday, or are otherwise unable to upload images within that time, then we can temporarily re-open the thread by arrangement.
